Internet Resources:
Here are a few links that we've found helpful in our own battles, listed alphabetically. (If you come across others, please email Dave, so we can add them here to share with everyone else.)
Covenant Eyes:
Covenant eyes has one of the best "automated accountability" solutions for the internet, although it's currently only an option if you use a Windows-based PC. (Sorry, we're not aware of any software of this sort for the Mac.) The Covenant Eyes program gives you a tool that lets accountability partners know what websites you've visited on your computer. It uses a small piece of software that's installed on your PC, which then reports every web visit to the Covenant Eyes server. Once a week, the Covenant Eyes server will email a report of your browsing habits to one or more accountability partners. There's no charge for your partners, you pay a monthly fee to be a part of the service. The fees start at $6.95/month or $74.95 if paid for a year in advance, but there are plans for families, churches, and businesses that reduce the cost, the more people are signed up. Covenant Eyes doesn't block anything, but it's very meticulous about logging every web visit you make.
Every Man's Battle Online Community:
This is the "official" Every Man's Battle website, operated by Newlife Ministries. It's membership-based, and at this point (early June, 2004), we haven't personally explored it much yet. You'll find information on workshops run by Newlife, as well as an online community (paid membership required) for support and accountability.
Heart to Heart Counseling Center:
This is Doug Weiss' ministry. Doug is a recovered sex addict and professionally trained counselor. He's the author of the (excellent) book Sex, Men, and God, and operates a busy counseling practice out of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He offers books, videos, telephone counseling, conferences, and 3-day intensives. His books are very practical, written from the viewpoint of a psychological counselor, who's also a strong Christian. His videos are good, but expensive: We have a couple of them available for loan. He also has a useful FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) file about sex addiction.
Project God
Apart from their one video, "XXX," that we linked to from our intro page, Project God doesn't have any direct relationship with Every Man's Battle issues. They do have some great short films that illustrate Biblical principles. Check them out, they're well-produced and thought-provoking, great material for illustrating sermon topics, study groups, etc. (Tony Muschara has a copy of their DVD, contact him to borrow it. - See our contact info below.)
Pure Life Ministries
This is Steve and Kathy Gallagher's ministry. Steve is the author of Out of the Depths of Sexual Sin, a powerful telling of Steve's life story, and his battle with and victory over porn and lust, and At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry, a book intended as a study guide for people working their way out of sexual addiction. Besides books and workbooks, the Gallaghers offer workshops, at-home courses with professional coaching and counseling, and live-in intensives up to and including a 6-month program. One of us went through the at-home coaching/counseling program, and so can recommend it. Thanks in part to Kathy's involvement, Pure Life also offers programs and support for wives of men addicted to porn.
Safeplace.net
This is an outfit that provides an excellent third-party filtering service, as well as filtered internet connections directly. If you don't have an internet service provider (ISP) yet, or want to switch to one that provides filtering as part of their service, Safeplace.net looks like a good bet. We don't have experience with their ISP services, but one of use uses their proxy-based filtering service with his existing broadband (cable and DSL both) internet connection. Safeplace's filtering technology appears to go quite a bit further than typical keyword-based filters, seemingly providing both more complete blocking of offensive websites, and fewer "false positives," in the form of blocked sites that shouldn't be. Highly recommended.
XXX Church:
XXX Church advertises itself as the "#1 Christian Porn Site," so that gives you a bit of an idea of their somewhat edgy approach to the issue. They have a variety of resources, including a discussion forum area, and X3 Watch, which is free accountability software, similar to the Covenant Eyes program. We don't have a lot of experience with the X3 Watch software, but at least one guy we know is using it, and it appears to work pretty well. XXX Church also offers X3 Help at Home, a series of 10-week intensive at-home study programs, that include weekly 30-minute phone sessions with a trained coach. This last isn't cheap, at $975 for individuals, or $1,750 for couples, but what's your purity (or your marriage) worth? (We don't yet know anyone personally who's gone through the X3 Help at Home program, so can't vouch for it ourselves. See Pure Life Ministries, mentioned above, for similar intensive at-home programs, that some of us do have experience with and can therefore recommend.)
Local Counseling Contacts:
We strongly encourage you to seek out a men's group through FBC, as there's no substitute for one-on-one accountability. A professional counselor can be very helpful though, in understanding the root causes of your behavior, recognizing triggers, etc. If you're married, it's pretty much a given that your relationship with your wife has suffered as a result of your fantasy life, wandering eyes, or other behavior. Working through the issues in your marital relationship with a counselor can pay huge dividends in healing and restoration. The resources below can help in any of these areas.
Staff Counselors at FBC:
Bob Roland and Dee Goar are professionally trained counselors on the FBC staff. Their services are available without charge to members of the FBC community. You can reach Bob or Dee through the FBC church office, at 770-992-4956.
North Atlanta Counseling Services
Gene Schrader (M. Ed.) is a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in working with men and couples battling porn and sexual sin in their lives. His office is in Roswell, so he's close by for most FBC members. Besides his one-on-one counseling services, he runs a Monday-night support/accountability group for men. 770-998-0989, or email him at NACS@bellsouth.net.
