What is a Stephen Minister? A lay person who attends to the care-giving process and leaves the results to God.
Stephen Ministers are lay people trained to give Christian care to those in and around our church who are going through a period of crisis, e.g., bereavement or other loss, chronic illness, unemployment, and other life difficulties. This care consists of reflective listening and the use of Christian resources such as prayer and the Scriptures. It does not involve counseling, and Stephen Ministers are trained that they should listen and empathize, not tell people what to do.
Stephen Ministers normally meet with their care receivers for about an hour a week. They work under the direction of trained Stephen Leaders with the support of the pastor. They meet regularly with other Stephen Ministers and their leaders for peer supervision in which they support and encourage one another and hold one another accountable for their ministry
